Compare FantaColor Portable 270 and FantaColor Junior 48 on storage, portability, and play style to choose the right peg art set for travel or tabletop play.
Quick answer
Choose FantaColor Portable 270 if you need one self-contained case for travel and free mosaic play. Choose FantaColor Junior 48 if you want a handled case that doubles as an upright display stand for copied card designs.
Portability and storage: case versus handled display
The clearest difference is how each set handles the play surface and pieces. FantaColor Portable 270 keeps all pieces in one easy-to-carry case, so it is the more natural fit for a bag, a car trip, or a visit to relatives. FantaColor Junior 48 uses a redesigned case with handles, and after play on a level surface the card can be inserted into the case to stand upright. That makes Junior 48 better for tabletop sessions where your child wants to follow a card and then show the finished work.
Play style: free creativity versus guided cards
Portable 270 is described as a timeless arrangement game where children insert pegs freely or copy examples from the album. The emphasis is on open-ended mosaic making and eye-hand coordination. Junior 48 comes with redesigned cards, which supports a more guided start: your child can pick a card, copy it, then display it upright. Neither approach is better in every case; free play suits children who invent their own patterns, while card play gives a clear first task.
What the catalog does not tell you
The supplied facts do not list peg counts, recommended ages, or exact case dimensions for either set. Do not assume that the number in the product name equals the peg count. If those details matter for your child, check the product page or packaging before buying. The comparison here is limited to storage design, portability, and how each set supports play.
Trade-offs to weigh before you choose
- Travel convenience: Portable 270 wins on simple transport because every piece stays in one carry case. Junior 48 also has handles, but its display feature is most useful on a flat surface at home or at a table. If the set will mostly live in a backpack or car, start with Portable 270.
- Guided versus open-ended play: Junior 48 gives your child redesigned cards to copy and a way to stand the card upright in the case. Portable 270 supports free mosaic invention or copying from its album, with no upright display described. Pick Junior 48 if your child likes following examples; pick Portable 270 if they prefer inventing.
- Display and pride: The upright card option on Junior 48 turns a finished mosaic into something your child can show off at the table. Portable 270 focuses on packing away and carrying, not on displaying the work. Choose Junior 48 when showing the finished design matters to your child.
