The lacing-pen is the clever bit here — my son figured out the sliding motion in about two minutes and now he's making rainbow patterns on his own. He keeps pressing the lace into the board and pulling it back out just to watch the colors change.

My daughter spends a solid hour sliding the lace into the pen and pressing it through, then pulling it all apart to start again. The undo part is honestly her favourite.
